Autumn days excerpt...

Autumn days....coming soon. I hope

The next day, Autumn sat outside once again, keeping her grandmother company as she worked on the fall flowers that lined the driveway. Her job was to pick up the clippings once all of the dead leaves had been cleared away. As she waited, she saw Scooter made a repeat performance of his escape from the house across the street.
“Hey Grandma,” Autumn called from the steps “I think that cat still lives across the street”
Her Grandmother made a questioning “Hunh?” sound as she twisted around to look behind her at the abandoned house. She caught a glimpse of the orange tail as his body disappeared into the grasses.
“Scooter?” she asked “Mrs Lewis left him behind? I can’t imagine that was easy. Miserable as that cat is, he was her baby. Raised him from a tiny kitten, you know? He was too small to be separated from his own mother when she found him.” She looked back at Autumn “The only person I ever saw that cat be nice to was Mrs Lewis.”
She nodded to herself “That cat was her baby” she repeated and looked up to Autumn where she sat perched on the top step. “You want to bring him a little something to eat, maybe some of the leftover chicken we had for dinner last night?”
Autumn sat frozen on the top. She had never seen her grandmother being friendly to any animal, let alone a dirty, mean, left-behind cat.
“You’re sure, Grandma?” Autumn questioned, just to make sure she hadn’t imagined the conversation
“I said to, didn’t I?” was her Grandmothers response.
Autumn rushed into the house before she changed her mind.
